The mining environment is plagued by two kinds of noise. Above ground, workers have to suffer the noise of huge stone-crushing and assembly-line movers. Below ground, the workers suffer the noise of stone drilling and moving equipment – in a cramped echo-chamber environment.
MSHA has recently taken a strong interest in mining noise issues. The reason: an alarming rate of health claims related to hearing loss. Mining workers do not use ear protectors because they find them inconvenient at best, dangerous at worst. Rather than use ear protectors, MSHA wishes to eliminate the noise at the source. The goal is usually to take at least 10 dB of noise out, across a broad frequency band.
Damping noise and vibration has traditionally been costly and risky – until now. Quiet Solution offers the mining industry a complete line of high-performance products to soundproof machinery, and the associated buildings and vehicles. Using a new generation of viscoelastic polymers, it is now possible to achieve high levels of quiet with a fraction of the bulk, weight and cost of traditional technologies.
The most effective way to mitigate mining machinery noise and vibration is to coat as much of the equipment as possible with QuietCoat viscoelastic polymer. The other approach is to contain the noise by building soundproof areas.
